Q1. What or who inspired you to work in investing?

I am fuelled by the idea that we are an industry with a social purpose. We help people achieve their financial goals in life and this intrinsically is at the heart of investing for any client. At Capital Group, our key principle is that we make our decisions based on what we believe is in the best long-term interest of clients. That act of service in helping clients attain their goals is powerfully motivating for me.

Q2. What do you think the future looks like for women in investing? What would you like to see?

The future is incredibly bright, and the industry’s strides are generally in the right direction.Although there is still a lot of progress to be made, the financial industry is increasingly investing in bringing in amazingly talented young women at the entry level. I would like to see more reaching down and uplifting of these fearless girls coming in so that over time they get to where they should be. In short this means more mentoring, more guidance, more help to supporting these fearless young women in realising their fullest potential.

Q3. What is your attitude to investment risk?

I am a firm believer in having total clarity on the possible range of outcomes of a decision.  The outcome should dictate the level of acceptable risk, and this is unique to each investor.

Q4. If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I am going rogue here: “I am enough, just as I am”. It took me a while to get there, but it is something I have learnt to articulate and persistently remind myself of. And although it’s easy to think that only “superwomen” can be successful in financial services, that really shouldn’t be and isn’t the case for me. Holding on to the persistent belief that we are enough as we are should be something we celebrate more.

Q5. Tell us your motto or if you don’t live by one, why not?

In times like this, a piece of advice that I was given by another fearlessly talented woman – Anne Richards of Fidelity – resonates strongly.

“Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

Having lived through the financial crisis of 2008, the pandemic and all its challenges, and most recently the dreadful geopolitical crisis that is going on, this motto is one I draw strength from.

As women it is important that we believe that we have the power to change things. The encouragement of that motto lets me personally know that it is possible for me to have an impact through adversity by persevering.

Nobody has all the answers, and this makes our forums of empowerment doubly important. For me as one of the co-founders of The Diversity Project, and co-lead of Capital Group’s Disability workstream, being a part of such change oriented enriching groups outlines how we are at an inflection point in society where real change is possible – particularly from our actions and words.
