Q1. What or who inspired you to work in investing?
I grew up learning about the climate challenge and I wanted to work in a field where I could make a difference. To me, there is incredible scope for the finance industry to advance the sustainable transition. Investors manage significant amounts of wealth, and they can use their influence in meaningful ways. By engaging with investee companies on sustainability issues, for example, or exercising their voting rights, asset managers can break new ground and define evolving investment trends.
Q2. What do you think the future looks like for women in investing? What would you like to see?
With renewed focus on diversity in recruitment processes, today’s workplaces are certainly welcoming investment professionals from a broader range of social groups and backgrounds. Change is underway and things are moving in a positive direction. There is a saying that goes “if I can see it, I can be it...”. When I first approached the job market, I would have been encouraged to see more women in finance and leadership positions. This would have given me confidence that there was, in fact, a place for me too in this industry. I hope that things keep on changing, so that others can be inspired to aim high.
Q3. What is your attitude to investment risk?
My role in the sustainable investment arm of Mirabaud Asset Management encourages me to think about investment risk beyond a strictly financial perspective. As with any risk, be that environmental, financial or reputational, I take time to understand it and assess the level of uncertainty that could affect financial welfare.
Q4. If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Resilience! I find that with work and in life there are always sticky situations that can test you in unexpected ways; the quicker you reframe challenges as opportunities to grow, the easier it is to move forward.
Q5. Tell us your motto or if you don’t live by one, why not?
‘The grass is greener where you water it’ – I believe that persistence and hard work can go a long way in living up to your potential.
