Q1. What or who inspired you to work in investing?
My interpretation of the investment role (and my investment philosophy) has been significantly influenced by the great mentors I’ve had inside my organisation as well as inspiring investors of our time such as Ray Dalio, Howard Marks, and Warren Buffett. I was drawn to the intellectual and psychological exercise of understanding the long-term drivers of securities and when the market is mispricing the sustainability of those drivers, as well as the opportunity to drive positive change through active ownership.
Q2. What do you think the future looks like for women in investing? What would you like to see?
I have always been puzzled as to why the financial and fund management industry has thus far attracted fewer women than other industries – there is no obvious reason why this should be the case. I believe this is a result of misperceptions about the industry that will normalise going forward. We – men and women - can all play a role in correcting these misperceptions and promoting our industry to women.
Q3. What is your attitude to investment risk?
As a long-term investor, I believe that real risk is permanent impairment of capital, as opposed to volatility which can create attractive opportunities for long-term investors. I therefore believe it is key to constantly reassess one’s long-term investment case – if it holds up, a correction in the security’s price provides an attractive buying opportunity, and true conviction in the long-term investment case provides the nerve to hold the position and exploit the security’s mispricing – if it is broken, this needs to be assessed as early as possible to limit further capital impairment.
Q4. If you had a superpower, what would it be?
The power to heal all physical or mental illnesses with no exceptions.
Q5. Tell us your motto or if you don’t live by one, why not?
I wouldn’t say I live by a single motto, but rather by strong values that guide the way I live and work. These include gratitude, compassion, tolerance, independence, and determination.
